Nice Guy

There was this guy who got his overalls real greasy working on his car, so he put them into a bucket and soaked them with gasoline to loosen the grease. Later on, his wife retrieved the overalls from the bucket and threw them into the washing machine, as she was going to wash a load of darks. The warm water came on and made the gasoline vaporize, and when the timer switch switched to rinse, a spark ignited the vapor. The explosion killed the man’s wife, and it destroyed the utility room, the bathroom, and the kitchen. The widower sued his dead wife’s mom and dad, because they were the ones who gave the washing machine to them as an anniversary present.

Did he win? And why'd he sue the in-laws instead of the manufacturer -- did the in-laws have deeper pockets? (I'm not sure the manufacturer is at fault either, but they're a more logical choice than the in-laws.)

I don't recall whether he won or lost, or if it was settled. I am guessing that he sued the in-laws because they had good insurance, and that they were "willing defendants" if that means anything,as opposed to him just being an ass of a guy, but I don't really know. The manufacturer was not at fault in my opinion. The machine wasn't defective, and only an idiot would put gasoline-soaked clothes in a washing machine. I would guess that washing machine user's manuals probably warn against such actions.
